Resurfacing a homes stucco with a polymer-based coating and embedded fiberglass mesh helps prevent cracking and improves durability. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it properly:

Step 1: Surface Preparation

1. Inspect the Stucco Check for cracks, loose areas, or damage. If there’s significant damage, repair it before proceeding.

2. Clean the Surface Use a pressure washer or a stiff brush with water to remove dirt, dust, and loose stucco.

3. Repair Cracks & Damage Fill cracks with an elastomeric or polymer-modified stucco patching compound. Allow it to dry.

4. Apply Bonding Agent (if needed) – If the old stucco is too smooth or powdery, apply a bonding agent to ensure good adhesion.

Step 2: Apply Base Coat with Fiberglass Mesh

1. Prepare the Polymer-Modified Base Coat – Mix the polymer-modified cement-based material per manufacturer instructions.

2. Apply a Thin Base Coat (~1/8 thick) Use a stainless steel trowel to spread the base coat evenly.

3. Embed the Fiberglass Mesh – While the base coat is still wet, press the alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh into the surface.

4. Overlap Mesh Seams (~2-4 inches) Ensure proper reinforcement by overlapping mesh sections.

5. Smooth & Flatten the Base Layer Use the trowel to fully embed the mesh and eliminate air pockets.

6. Let It Cure and Allow at least 24-48 hours for the base coat to set before applying the finish coat.

Step 3: Apply Finish Stucco Coat

1. Mix the Finish Coat Use a polymer-modified stucco mix in the desired texture and color.

2. Apply the Stucco Finish (~1/8 - 1/4 thick) Spread evenly using a trowel.

3. Texture the Surface (Optional) and Use a float, sponge, or brush for different stucco finishes (e.g., smooth, knockdown, or dash).

4. Cure Properly and Lightly mist with water for a few days if needed, depending on weather conditions.

Step 4: Final Touches

1. Inspect for Any Imperfections and Patch any minor flaws before the material fully hardens.

2. Seal the Surface (Optional) Apply a breathable stucco sealer for added water resistance.

3. Clean Up & Maintain and Keep the surface clean and periodically check for any small cracks or repairs.

This method provides a strong, crack-resistant stucco finish that will last for years. Let me know if you need specific product recommendations or troubleshooting tips!
